Tips For Brushing And Flossing With Braces

Having braces as a younger child can be a bit of a challenge when the time comes to take proper care of your teeth. We want to encourage children to brush and floss daily, even if they have braces to make the process a bit more difficult. As your orthodontist serving Pilsen, we are giving you some tips and tricks on how to brush and floss properly when you have braces.

Swish With Water

If you rinse your mouth with water after eating food and before brushing your teeth, it will loosen food that may be caught within the braces. Then, once you brush, some areas might be easier than others to remove the plaque buildup.

Fluoride Rinse

After you brush your teeth each time, make sure to rinse with fluoride to help keep your teeth strong and healthy. Fluoride helps to repair the enamel by replenishing lost calcium and phosphorus, ultimately keeping your teeth hard and healthy.

Use The Right Tool

A child with braces can feel frustrated and defeated when it comes time to floss in between the wires and brackets. Consider using orthodontic floss threaders that are inexpensive and disposable. The threader helps by allowing you to thread the floss between your gums, under the wire, and through the teeth to access the gum line and other hard-to-reach areas.

Proper Flossing Technique

First and foremost, everyone should make sure to be flossing once a day, preferably each night before bed. Flossing will help loosen food debris and plaque that the toothbrush may not be able to reach. If your child needs help learning the proper flossing technique, make sure you show them the correct way to do it. Gently slide the floss up and down into the gum line of both teeth before you remove the floss and threader on to the next tooth.

Waxed Floss

If you use non-waxed floss, it can get caught on the braces and leave behind shreds of floss on your brackets and in between your gums. A waxed piece of floss with a threader will slip between each tooth easily and will not get caught.
